[sdiy] PCB Design Software?

Ive been reading this with interest, having looked at eagle in the past, and, to be honest, not gotten that far...

However, if i ultimatly want to end up with gcode for mechinical isolation routing do any of these suggested packages had 
filters/scripts etc thatll get any way to gcode?

Im aware that gerber can be imported in to Eagle, and then, using availible scripts, outputted as gcode, but this seems a pretty 
convoluted way of doing things.
