Hey Kyle,
I would probably try replacing the attack pot with a 1K resistor
(rather than a short), as you would want to limit the current going
through the steering diodes seen in most AR generators. Another trick
you might try is simply differentiating and buffering a gate pulse,
and adding a variable resistor to the differentiator (to allow varying
the release time). Thomas Henry shows a circuit like this in the
Electronic Drum Cookbook, and it works really well. I'll send you a
picture of the schematic if you want.
