I don't know for sure, but I've built a lot of fuzzes, and I'd say
that anything should work. The response is determined by the diodes
much more than the amp, so it shouldn't change the sound much - but
I'm not one of those who thinks that original JRC4558s are the best
thing since sliced bread.
Try the usual candidates - I used to use TL064's for battery units
and TL074's for the improved noise figure (Did I get that the right
way around?)
If you want a real studio-grade unit, there are probably some more
expensive esoteric audiophile choices.
