[sdiy] Paia Midi/CV - Glide

Thanks,
Yeah, I'm not completely clear on the MIDI implementation, but I have
tested the sequencer w/ my Novation Nova, and if I have the portamento
knob turned up on the nova, and in the sequencer I stretch the gates for
two notes until they are touching, the sequencer displays the word
"glide" and it does indeed work. It sounds just like the 303 where you
can specify steps to glide together. The amount of glide depends on the
setting of the portamento knob on my nova. I was hoping the paia would
see the glide signal from the sequencer, and then just increase (or
decrease) the voltage between the two notes, rather than just jumping
from one voltage to the next. I didn't think it would do it, but I
figured I'd ask. The XOX box has CV output and it does indeed work w/
the glide function to the external CV. I built the XOX for a friend,
and I had a whole lot of fun using it's sequencer to control my modular.
It's not worth it to me, however, to build another XOX just for the
sequencer functions. I could care less about its analog 303 sound
implementation.
Maybe Limur from x0x would sell me a kit w/ just the parts for the
sequencer. I guess its worth writing her an email to see.
The sequencer I'm building is the Midibox seq. It's VERY cool for a
step sequencer.
I planned on building that CGS analog sequencer before I changed my mind
and started my first digital project, the midibox seq. I fell kind of
bad moving from analog to digital for the sequencer, but it was SOOO
much easier to build for the amount of functions it has.
thanks again,
Scott

Subject: Re: [sdiy] Paia Midi/CV - Glide
Hi.
The MIDI spec doesn't have MIDI glide "events" as such.
The closest to that is MIDI CC65, which is configured as a switch
(values of 64 and above are on, below 64 =off) and is the portamento
on/off switch. Portamento and glide can be implemented differently, (
no, I'm not going into that one....) but in many cases can practically
be used in the same way.
The paia doesn't respond to MIDI CC65 unfortunately.....
Midi continuous controller 5 (portamento time) is the the closest thing
to glide rate.
In mode 4, the paia will generate midi controllers 0 thru 7. In the
paia, the modes are fixed - you choose which sets of MIDI decoded
messages you want with the mode switch. (check the operating modes page
on the paia site - it's also in the printed manual with the unit if
you've bought one already)
If your sequencer is an analogue one, you can have glide on or off per
step, by including a separate set of on/off switches, one for each
step, that feeds a second gate output . This is then patched into a
gate-controlled LAG processor, which when patched before a VCO gives
glide. Thus your sequencer only needs a clock, stop, and start. Glide
on/off is handled in the sequencer itself.
A CV controlled portamento could be fun if fed from a bank of pots -
different glide rates per step.......
The CGS 07 gate sequencer is worth a look at.....
Hope this helps... :-)
cheers,
Dave
