[sdiy] sort of OT: Synth used in Tommy the Movie by the Who

I think I once read somewhere waht kind of synth Pete Townshend used for the 
music of the movie version of the Who classic "Tommy". I personally find the 
movie to be great fun and the synth work is superb. It is quite a separate 
entity from the original album - and that is OK. I was amazed to see how 
still smokin' hot Ann Margaret was in The Santa Clause 3.

I'm especially interested in the sounds that occur during the meeting with 
the specialist when she is fantasizing about him. But the rest of it 
intrigues me as well.

I'm guessing that it was some sort of EMS synth, but which one?
