That actually wasn't uncommon back in the day. For reasons
not clear to me, up until about 1980, silicon PNPs were
far more expensive than NPNs. In fact, many silicon NPN
types didn't even have a complementary PNP. So lots of
push-pull amp designs used the germanium PNPs. I can't
imagine how much trouble it must have been to get the crossover
to match up, though.
As for your germaniums -- consider hunting up a preamp
design for them. E.g., the Chandler Germanium seems to be
all the rage among recording engineers these days.
