I have to say I quite agree, since the greater trend in FORWARD
technological advancement, at least in the realm of consumer electronics, is
CHEAPER, SMALLER, CRAPPIER. MP3 players area prime example of the concept as
a whole: touted as "NEAR CD quality". Why not "smaller and way better?" The
portability factor is great but the crapiness is contagious: I bought a
Philips brand MP3/CD player and it certainly plays disks of MP3's quite like
you'd expect, but when you play a normal CD, you get that annoying pause gap
in between tracks just like an MP3 player and not smooth like a normal CD
player. It's sad that this was a product that was manfactured under the
moniker at least of the company that designed CD's - the stats of which were
never "audiophile" - why the chose 44.14 (or point whatever), I'll never
know - and a 5-ish" sized disc would not make for a readilly pocketable
device.
Of course I'll stop complaining when I can get a small FLAC player - maybe
The point is there used to be some great quality silicon that was really
ahead of its time. Those Curtis chips are so cool and versatile, it's a
shame they couldn't have muddled through to the renewed interest in REAL
analog, when advanced, forward-thinking modeling just wasn't cutting it for
a lot of people.
