Exactly. That's what the 80017A clones are. Yes, the 80017 is already
a module, but, it contains a IR3109 chip which has to be cloned. The
2040 clones that people are talking about are, of course, also
function clones. For synth repair there is often enough room for a
slightly thicker/wider/longer IC chip. And of course, you can get
short runs without spending an  arm and a leg. As you say, a good
hobby business for someone.
