Yes, that method of the Paia Vocoder is just brilliant.
Not so unexpensive now anymore, though.
Maybe try NE572.

I think the best really cheap VCA would be the hex vca from Polyphony
July/Aug 1979.
But I can't see a schematic on the web.
The MS20 VCA is rather noisy & requires transistor selection.
Personally, I'd try using NE571s, because you get two VCAs and two envelope
followers per chip. If you can find NE571 or NE570 cheap, that is...
