[sdiy] 1 Meg input level pots?

A while back I bought several very high quality 1 Meg linear panel
mount pots for way-mass-cheap. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I'd
like to use these as input attenators for a modular synth but most of the
circuits I've seen use input atenuator pots in the 50K to 100K range - give
or take.
If I understand what I've read correctly the big drawback to high R
value pots is that they add (thermal ?) noise to the signal. Now to my way
of thinking (no EE in this neighborhood) this shouldn't be much of a problem
for control voltages but audio signals may be another matter. I'm pretty
sure that there's a good reason why nobody, as far as I've been able to
find, uses 1 Meg pots for input level control for any reason.
Since I would be basically using them as voltage dividers, I have to
ask, what bad thing happens if I go ahead and throw caution to the wind and
use these things for input level control pots ?
If my question results in a "burn the infidel" reaction in you,
perhaps you could offer some pointers as to what they could be used for in
an analog application.
Thanks in advance,
James
