I think they might be some kind of ringing from rectifier diodes switching
off, because they are locked to the mains phase.
But the whole thing is ironic when I think of a cartoon from a 1950s Punch
magazine, where a couple of old farts are leaning across a fence under an
electric pylon, and one is saying:
"Quantity, quantity... you never hear anything about the QUALITY of
electricity these days".
