Pitch detection's major problem for bass is the long time it takes

I have a suggestion that come from a similar core problem though not a
basss. How about set of a capacitive/proximity sensors under the fretboard?
There are systems that can detect through 8mm plastic, so wood should be no
problem. It doesn't matter if more than one rtigger for 'hinting', and it
might be useful to detect finger postions anyway. If you're stooping more
than one string, then the problem becomes more complex, and might involve
scanning.

These people may have a product of use: http://www.qprox.com/

Just a thought.anyway

I think Maplin have small pieces of QTC here in the UK, I could get you
pack an post it on to you - it's fairly cheap.
