I think mu-metal loses its properties if bent.

If your problem is voltage induced in the wires by the magnetic
field of the transformer, I'm not sure electrical contact between
the case and the shielding is important. Physical contact might
be.

Try steel first ? It's not as efficient as mu-metal but it's cheap
and readily available.
