Have you considered approaching this more like an OB-8 than an
Oberheim 8 Voice? In the latter (a collection of monosynths), you
have individual controls for each parameter of each voice; in the
former (a polysynth), you have one set of controls that works
collectively on all voices.
The reduction in front panel area is huge if you take a polyphonic approach.
You could also use 2 sets of controls if you want it to be a 2-voice
polytimbral synth. Say, one setting for the bass strings and another
for the treble strings.
