I think that's important only for those folks that really want "authenticity" 
in terms of how the thing looks,  and I haven't for the most part run into 
folks that were into that.  Never gutted one of those yet,  or at least not 
with that intention -- other faults did the job for me on occasion...

Some years back I worked with a guy to do a bunch of repairs on antique stuff. 
The original caps in those mounted by way of a big threaded bushing,  with a 
nut on there like something you'd expect to find in your car.  The only 
replacements I could get were cans that had the twist tabs on them.  Lucky 
for me I could also get some mounting plates for them as well.
