I've never seen them done any other way,  and I've seen a *lot* of these over 
the years.  Occasionally there were some with cardboard covering the can and 
the mounting plate being bakelite rather than metal for some odd applications 
like a negative supply or something that was hot to chassis.

A bit bigger around was more typical for 4-section units,  and I've got some 
that are six inches long.

Letters?  I've never seen that,  though I have seen a small square,  
half-circle,  or triangular cutout in the bakelite with corresponding 
markings stamped into the can.  You need some way to identify which section 
is which!

Probably the only thing you can do these days,  I don't think those are 
available any more,  unless it's NOS that somebody has (like I have).  I 
should probably list those one of these days,  I guess.
