It seems you guys are talking about slightly different things. I
believe Heiko wants to be able to use his digital pot as a drop-in
replacement in existing circuits. Hence a need for high resolution but
also not just an adjustable resistor but a real potentiometer.

If you just want digital control over analogue synthesis you're better
off with CV controlled circuits; ones that doesn't have the pots in
the audio path. These exist. Most filters are like this and I recently
discovered a CV ADSR by one of the list members,

With CV controlled circuits you can use smoothing capacitors to
eliminate zipper noise.
