Here's an example. I've got an ongoing project to complete reverse
engineering the Voyetra Eight PCBs (see progress at
http://www.wohmart.com/v8/ .  I have blanket approval from both the
former CEO and the only remaining tech from the original team to
complete this work...but I've only asked after this for reproducing
and possibly rebuilding older machines. I didn't ask about whether or
not I'd be in the clear to use these schematics to produce, say, new
V8s -- because I presumed I'd be in the wrong.

"One" would have to substantially modify the circuit -- say, the CPU
boards, or SSM/CEM replacement -- to produce a new machine that is
distinctly different. Such an activity would allow "one" to continue
with selling a new product...though asking the original copyright
holder nicely is always a Good Idea (tm).  :)
