My scanner recently had a bookcase fall on it, so I've been
looking at scanners......
I didn't take details (they were out of my price range by an
order of magnitude or two) but I believe there are scanners now
that correct for the distortion. And also have a much greater depth
of field (they are called, with characteristic advertising
hyperbola, "3-D scanners" though it is just a scanner).
Doubtless you could find a graphics place that would scan for
a price.
As to the question of SMT - if it works for DIP, it will work for
SMT. Because, althought the SMT is very tiny, the errors are
shrunk as well ;-D
It is, of course, illegal to copy commercial boards this way.
Think "copyright".
