OpenOffice is a free Micro$oft Office replacement and has already been
mentioned (for Mac there's a more native version of OpenOffice called
NeoOffice, which is also free) which can be used to read/write Word files.
As for reading PDF files I have a plugin for my browser which lets me
view PDFs right there, in a browser window! It only works with PPC Macs,
but any browser except Internet Exploder.. eh, I mean Explorer ;-)

The same author has made a plugin which allows you to view Word files
directly in the web browser (again PPC Macs only and any browser except
Internet Explorer): http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginword/
That saves you having to start OpenOffice/NeoOffice/Word etc. each time
you want to read a Word file online. Unfortunately some of the
formatting sometimes gets lost, but in that case you'll just view the
file in OpenOffice etc.
Sorry I don't know of any Windows equivelant plugins, although I'm sure
something like that is available for Windows as well.
