First answer is - a lot more than many of us!
Perhaps I might be able to help with this, dregiing up memories from my home
computer days. Azimuth alignment of the recorder is crucial. I was reminded
recently when I found out the hard way that the azimuth on my old walkman
pro was out whilst trying to reload a prgram backup tape into a PLC - whose
battery had of course, failed. If you can get an alignment tape, very good,
otherwise it's on of the olfd try several recording trick. Its the HF
setting that is important. If the HF rsponse of your soundcard is filtered
somehow, or 'phasing', that may be the problem.
