Probably. The M part is pretty much the same device with a 500mA limit 
instead of a supposed 1A.

But remember that if a rail short does happen the M part will take less 
from the power supply. IIRC 78XX typically take around 1.5A from the 
supply when they are shorted until they turn off due to overheating.

The M parts were cheaper back in the day - but not now I would think.
