Incidentally, the entire schematic for the 709 can be found in the
datasheet with resistor values. I imagine almost any PNP/NPN smalll
signal pairs will work then you could have the pimpest cracklebox on
the planet because it would be DISCRETE!!!  After all, there are only
14 transistors in the circuit. For double fun you could put the
discrete 709 into one of those round mint tins and use something like
#12 solid wire for the leads.
