Which size Alphas are you using?  They make a fairly small (16mm ~ 3/4") 
one - available at Small Bear (smallbearelec.com).  I can get columns 5 pots 
tall on a FracRak panel, and you wouldn't really want them much closer IMO. 
There wouldn't be enough finger room for me.

When you say "regular Alpha pots", I wasn't sure if you were referring to 
their 24mm (~1") bodies.

Look for people modding TR-606's and TB-303's.   They use some really small 
pots to add controls - maybe someone has mentioned a brand?   I'd try 
Devilfish links first.
