I agree that the signal injection should not be at the tape input, but...
If one DOES want to use the tape input, there were a number of gadgets
designed to do exactly that (dummy tape cassettes with some electronics
inside, that were used in cars without CD players a few years ago, so you
could listen to a portable CD player via a car tapedeck).

Incidentally I saw someone on the tram using a portable CD player the other
day. Among all the pod people, she looked as retro as an Edwardian clutching
a Victrola.. which latter at least has the advantage of no batteries.
