Depends what you mean by "tape deck output."  The tape deck output is
probably just the head output which is a very low level signal.
Moreover, simply wire oring the two signals together will send synth
output into the tape head which MIGHT erase, or at least, affect the
tape recording permanently.

The simplest way to do this is to feed the synth output through a 10k
resistor (or so) to the wiper (center terminal) of the volume control.
If the boom box is stereo, use two resistors tied to each center wiper
and tie the other end of the two resistors together and attach it to
your synth.
