Passing a signal through "heavy iron" (a large transformer) is said 
to do magical things to the sound -- or not, depending on the 
transformer in question. This is particularly popular in microphone 
preamps. You could build a preamp or line driver (buffer) with one of 
the Altecs in the circuit and see if you hear the magic.
