There are other solutions that you can run on an iBook.
For example:

1/ JGIF - a Java clone of XFIG
2/ OpenOffice - the Drawing package is quite good, and you have lots  
of fonts to play with!

If you're keen enough it is possible to get TGIF to compile for OSX,  
or through DarwinPorts.  I used TGIF for a lot of diagrams in the  
past and it is really very nice to use.  It is particularly suited to  
automating a lot of the process of producing a drawing in a format  
for putting into a LaTeX document (I used it a lot for my thesis,  
with a large makefile that autogenerated everything).
