I agree completely.  In fact I've _only_ used the AVR-GCC compiler  
(being the cheapskate that I am :).  If you're looking for a tried  
and tested RTOS for the AVR which is (a) fast and (b) very small I  
can personally recommend AvrX:

There's a reasonably active group on Yahoo too.  The very latest  
version of AvrX is available through the Yahoo group.
