I know there are quite a few others on the list that use the AVR in
their synthesizers, and this email is mostly for them or anybody who is
thinking about starting to use the AVR...

I have been using the AVR since about 2001. I have been, up until now,
using the ImageCraft C compiler. It is a very nice compiler, but it can
cost a couple hundred bucks.

I have switch over to using WinAVR (this is a GNU tool...just search for
WinAVR...you will find it...it is on sourceforge ). When you consider
that this tool is free, and it has a very high level of
performance...well, if you have been wanting to use a C compiler, now is
  the time.

It integrate in real nice with AVR Studio (you will want to get 4.13 if
you haven't already done so).
