Well this *is* SDIY... Even Colin's P3 had very humble beginnings.
I don't feel like I'm reinventing the wheel, I'm improving it for my
style of driving :)
* I want to be able to look at the knobs and sliders to see what's what;
EVERY CONTROL TOTALLY LIVE. Not the case on the P3/Zeit. Yeah I know I
can't save my patterns, not a problem for me. I go into improv mode
when I have a step sequencer in front of me :)
* I want to be able to quantize to ANY set of notes (not just a certain
scale). The P3 lets you define the scale, but it still quantizes to the
same X notes in each octave. Don't know about the Zeit...
* I want to have the System 700 sequencer's "step length" feature. This
is one of those things you can't really appreciate unless you've
actually used it. Say that all 16 steps are set to length 1/16; a
standard measure of 4/4. Change step #5 to 1/8 and now you've
"inserted" an extra 1/16 of a measure into the sequence. Now it's a
measure of 17/16. Flip the reset on step 15 and you'll be back to 4/4
(14 x 1/16 + 1 x 1/8). Imagine if your word processor was stuck in
"overtype" mode and couldn't insert text at the cursor. That's what a
"regular" step sequencer seems like after an hour on the System 700 :)
I'm trying to take the best of all the various step sequencers I've used
and put it all together. The P3 and Zeit are fabulous instruments, but
not exactly what I want. And having mine based on the PSIM, I can
always modify the code to add something new.
