Just got this in the mail last week, and it really is fantastic! There
are quite a few tricks to be done with the power supply, to extend the
CV range, do different types of waveshaping/wavemultiplying like Tom
mentioned and make to the output properly logarithmic. And yes, the 8038
is out of production and generally about twice as expensive as the 2206,
which seems to be the winner of the bunch in terms of usability anyways.

Tom's compact PCB also looks very usable and I've been thinking to etch
up a few in the coming weeks.
One thing I was curious about, and maybe I should just read the relevant
chapter in the book about, is what happens if you use a 12V power
supply, such as that which comes with my Doepfer rack (+12/-12V in
addition to the +5/-5V), instead of the 15V one. My expectation would be
a lower pitch range, but I'm not sure what else...have you tried that, Tom?
best,
d.
