Don't forget about FPGAs. I and others are working on several projects. Please visit
http://www.fpga.synth.net/
I have several Wiki items posted that include code for full (but simple) synth projects.
There are also contributions from others on the FPGA-synth email list (you can find
instructions on how to join on www.fpga.synth.net). I found the "bang-for-buck" factor to
be very high using the Xilinx Spartan-3E Starter Kit. It contains everything you need
except a MIDI to TTL interface (I have a schematic for a 6N138 interface included with my
projects, others have provided interface schematics for other optos) to begin synth
experiments immediately.
