I vaguely remember some discussions about a quite similar proposal, that 
took place here many years ago (I would have to dig the archives, but I 
think it was between Martin Czech and some other suspects including 
myself...).

One point back then was that the "modulo" function required would lead 
to discontinuities in the form of glitches, where artefacts could occur.

Such a wavefolder also would have to be quite exact, to really align the 
individual pieces of the waves.

But then again, if the circuitry is fast and accurate enough, that 
shouldn't really be an issue.
