So far results are promising. The hardest and most time consuming part of
these mods is the 80+ wires that need to be tagged. Removing the bass
rolloff filters gives a nice full sound, bleed and some good vibrations.
With the new percussion voices and click, this thing really does sound like
an actual Hammond organ now.
Taking out the Miller filters on the bus amps does brighten things up too.
The "Brilliance" tab is now completely useless and has no effect because the
sound isn't dull anymore!
For the mod on the recovery amp I left the original rolloff cap hanging and
soldered in a 220pf cap along side it also with one lead hanging. I am
experimenting here by using a grounded jumper wire to alternate the 2 caps
and thereby change the response to the AO-29 sound and the original curve.
The difference is subtle but the AO-29 tone is a bit airyer sounding. When
I'm done playing around here I'll use that "Brilliance" tab to select the
curve and bypass the brilliance filter altogether.
I must say the author of these mods was making a real understatment by
calling the percussion part an improvement. This may just be the best of all
the mods put together. That second and third harmonics sound is killer. Now
I didn't change the multitrigger yet. I am kinda liking that for some things
I play. I'll try to assess whether I can incorporate a switch that can turn
it on and off somehow so it's not permanently gone.
Funny thing about the original percussion presets, the 2 that remain sound
alot better with the changes to the bus and recovery amp filters.
I haven't changed the drawbar presets yet. I'm a synth guy so drawbars are
little beyond my ken. So far I just use the bottom 2 or 3 pulled all the way
out. Before I even consider changing those presets I better find some that I
like. Maybe somebody with some Hammond experience can lend me a hand here.
So far so good. Now I have to tackle the lower manual!!! DOH!
