[sdiy] hardware preference

I built a bread board using those when I was a kid about 40 years ago. It
had 2 nine pin and 2 eight pin sockets. They were round, had things that got
really hot and glowed in them.

Fahnestock clips by far would be more flexible and less
expensive.  They also serve as test for your age if you even know
what a fahnestock clip is.
