This may be in the overkill category as well but ...

You could add a feature to the lever to interrupt an opto beam.

I am retrofitting a couple of two octave pedal boards with slotted
opto-interrupters.
I have completed a PCB layout that contains the optos and a shift register.
The boards are easy to build and easy to attach to the back of the pedals.

I am using Fairchild MOC70P1 interrupters but there are probably
quite a few much smaller parts that would work better in your
application. The Fairchild parts are in the $0.50 - $1.00 range.
