I remember the tuning slugs (as they call them) in the Vox being very soft.
I think they are made from some metallic powder in what felt like a hard
wax compound.
BUT, if some is missing from being broken by a toothbrush... at least that
will lower the inductance, and so adding parallel capacitance might bring
the resonance back down to the required frequency. If you can find the cap
in question - and if you can get at it, it's probably pretty crowded - and
if
the circuit IS like that!
