[sdiy] Hacking a JL Cooper CS-10

Greetings list, pardon if this is on the fringe of OT but I could use some
advice.

I recently came into possession of a CS10 control surface however it only
has a old mac serial (8 pin) interface and I would like to put some standard
midi connectors on it.  The manual states that the device uses standard midi
protocols but I am not sure how to go about taking the serial out and
converting it into a 1in/1out midi.  Now a normal mac serial to midi
interface is just an opto, xtal, and a buffer so would it be reasonable to
just slap that on the serial port?

Any advice is greatly welcomed.
