[sdiy] Heat shrink tubing driving me crazy....

Are you sure it is really heat shrink?

There are a lot of products that look like heat shrink but aren't. If you bought it from some sort of store or online maybe they sold you the wrong stuff.

Most "magnet wire" in transformers is coated with some form "enamel" insulation. Usually a dark redish brown in color.
