Another thing to note is that Freescale released their new Symphony
Studio along with the new DSPs - it's GNU, eclipse based, and totally
free.

I keep mentioning this to my TI and Analog Devices reps when they come
by, they have yet to impress upon the factory that it's important to
have a complete yet free version of their tools. I firmly believe this
is why the DSP56K series ended up in things like the Chameleon,
ProTools TDM cards, and a large number of VA synths on the
marketplace.
