Its probably the rosin in the solder if you are using
uhhh... rosin core solder (I do...)
If the iron is too hot, it would be worse. I like to run
my iron no hotter than 750F
The place I used to work for (well still do, only new owners)
made some clever soldering iron cleaners by taking two bristle
brushes, facing each other in a U-shaped frame. You quickly
whish the iron tip between the two brushes and the tip is cleaned...
no need to use water / sponge. Tip life is WAY better that way.
