[sdiy] soldering iron problem

Hello, I have my wtcp soldering station on alot lately and there seems to be a constant build up of black "gunk." No I am not burning up wire  insulation! The guunk will form even when I simply wet the tip with some solder and let it set for a moment (30 seconds or so). I am guessing the the soldering pencil is getting too hot...

Anybody have any insight as to what could be causing this?
