Yes! I didi this with a mask rom version inside the Crumar Bit One and Crumar
Master keyboard and there was NO CODE PROTECTION!
So try to get a functional chip and read it out and copy it to a 8748 or 8749.

Maybe you can find the rom image file (binary or intelhex) somebody could 
burn it for you. If you are in Europe I could make it for you - I have some 
8748 and 8749 left. If you are from the States it would be cheaper to find 
someone near you.
