Years ago, I dismantled a (faulty) dBx VCA module, and I
noticed that the 2SC1583s inside had snug fitting aluminium
boxes over the plastic.  They didn't have any electrical
connection to anywhere that I could see (not earthed, so
unlikely to be for screening)), so I assume they must have 
been there to even out the temperature across the device
 - so maybe where you attach the tempco might make a 
difference.

I don't suppose that helps, but I thought it was vaguely
interesting.
