Internal use of the entire MIDI statndard would be
overkill. I think if you used fast SPI as the
electrical layer and then just used the MIDI messaging
system over SPI you'd have a good inexpensive data
link plus a clear path for future work. And you're
not limited to 31.25 K baud. You can use SPI as fast
as you dare and skip past all the MIDI latency
problems (assuming your firmware latency is
tolerable).
If you can't use SPI, then just use async serial
without the opto-coupler at a high baud rate. You'll
need to hunt for the highest baud rate. 500K baud is
easily achievable on short cables.
