A good transistor sub would have similar gain (Hfe or beta)

Temperature is not an issue in this type of circuit. All transistors
are ~not~` temperature stable. For use an a log or expo converter, they have
to be stabilized by controlling the ambient temperature (heating) or measuring
and compensating (tempco resistor or other circuit).
