I agree with Seb. I don't think there is any great health risk to
individuals from lead solder. We all know lots of people who have
been using it for years, and no-one is suffering from any lead-
related ailments.
Instead, the motivation for the European crusade against lead (and
other heavy metals) in electronics is to keep it out of the
environment, where it can build up as a result of dumped electronic
waste. (Aside: Isn't the environment where all the lead came from in
the first place?!)
My technology teacher of years ago told me that the worst danger of
soldering was getting fumes or splashes in your eyes, and we all had
to wear goggles. These days, I wear glasses.
So, be careful and don't suck the end of your solder whilst you think
about which way round that transistor goes and you'll be fine!
