I've used 6850s for MIDI interfacing many years ago.
You'll find a schematic for the 6850-based Hybrid Music 2000 interface here:

and will see CTS and DTS are pulled low externally.

I'm sure it doesn't matter which way they are pulled if you aren't using
handshaking though.
