It may not be the chips. A lot of LCD's use a 'zebra pad' to connect them to
the PCB. these can be affecte by moisture and stop connecting. I've fixed
phone and hand held instrument displays, with the same symptoms, by
dismantling, cleaning up the contact area, and reassembling.
